Is College Worth the Cost?

Freshly Squeezed with Colin McEnroe at Watkinson School in Hartford, Connecticut.

There's a debate over whether college should prepare kids with specific skills that will prepare them for jobs, or give them a wide-ranging but more general liberal arts education.

The simmering controversy has intensified in the face of rising college costs and bleak job prospects. There are more college-educated people than ever before, but supply is outpacing the demand.

Many students today are told they need to go to college, whether they're ready or not. Many are graduating, but some are not, with jobs that don't pay enough to erase the debt they accumulated along the way.

Is the main purpose of education to school the mind to be a well-informed citizen, and think independently? If so, do we need higher education to do that? If not: what is the purpose of college?

This show begins the fourth season of Freshly Squeezed with Colin McEnroe. The event took place at Watkinson School in Hartford on October 7, 2015.

GUESTS:

  • Michael Gargano Jr. - Former provost and senior VP for academic and student affairs at Connecticut State College and University System
