Licenses For NY's New Casinos Still Expected This Year

A top state gambling official says New York remains on track to award up to three long-awaited casino licenses before the end of the year.

Three casino proposals were endorsed last year by a state casino location board. But the formal awarding of the casino licenses had to wait for the state Gaming Commission to complete regulatory tasks, including background checks on the projects' developers.

With most of that work now complete, Commission Executive Director Robert Williams told the commissioners Thursday that a final vote to formally award the licenses could come before the end of the year.

The projects are located in the Catskills, Schenectady and the Finger Lakes. Work on the Finger Lakes casino was halted this summer by a legal fight with local opponents.
