The Libertarian Party is suing the state of Connecticut in federal court, challenging laws regarding the rules for petitioning candidates to appear on the election ballot.
The party specifically objects to a provision requiring Connecticut residents to gather the necessary signatures.
Dan Barrett, legal director for the ACLU of Connecticut, told The Connecticut Law Tribune the law violates the First Amendment and creates a "major restriction to reach voters."
ACLU has joined the law firm Day Pitney in filing the suit on behalf of the Libertarian Party. The lawsuit is part of a national effort by the Libertarians, which has challenged similar laws in other states.
Jacyln Fakowski, a spokeswoman for the Connecticut Attorney General's Office, said the complaint was being reviewed and the office had no further comment.
