A second weekend of protests is underway in Connecticut and across the nation following the police killing of George Floyd in Minnesota.
Thousands of people gathered on the New Haven Green and marched to the city’s police department, where organizers read off a list of demands.
“Immediate divestment of the New Haven Police Department, reducing the proposed NHPD budget from $43 million to $10 million, and depositing the extra $33 million in our public education system!”
Other demands included replacing police in public schools with counselors and prosecuting police who have been involved with killings or beatings. A local youth activist group organized the protest.
They chanted: “Money for schools! Not the police!” New Haven mayor Justin Elicker said now is a time to reflect on ways to change systemic racism.
