Officials running the state's new health care exchange say thousands of people are enrolling for insurance as Monday's deadline draws near.
Two thousand people a day enrolled on Saturday and Sunday in order to have health insurance coverage by January 1. Kevin Counihan, who runs Access Health CT, said he's encouraged by what he saw on Monday. He said, "It's going through the roof, and it's far greater than we had expected, to be frank. We were expecting today to be a very big day."
Counihan said between 400 and 500 people are enrolling each hour. By the time midnight hits, he expected the state to reach nearly 60,000 enrollees. That keeps him on target to reach the goal of between 80,000 and 100,000 by the end of March.
One other note: although the federal government extended its deadline by a day for enrollment, Connecticut's deadline is still midnight on Monday.
