Representatives from a Stamford-based nonprofit are heading to Puerto Rico this week to provide health services to Hurricane Maria survivors.

Dr. Anne Peterson, senior vice president of global programs for Americares, said she’s already been to the island with members of her organization to support those in need. She was there just after the storm hit in September.

“We delivered medicines and relief supplies,” Peterson said. “We provided treatment for survivors through mobile medical teams.”

Americares won’t just have supplies like antibiotics, respiratory, and diabetes medication for the mainland. They’ll also set up a mobile command center to an area that is in particular need of help -– the island of Vieques.

“It is both more vulnerable and it is always cut off from the island, so getting services restored there is difficult,” Peterson said.

Peterson said Americares has already treated 1,600 Puerto Ricans.
